Solar & Astronomical Facts About Brazil
- 1Northern cities like Macapá sit directly on the Equator, enjoying almost exact 12-hour days year-round.
- 2Rio de Janeiro's Ipanema Beach sunset is famous for the crowd applause tradition as the sun dips below Two Brothers mountain.
- 3Brazil spans four official time zones.
How Seasons Change Sunrise & Sunset in Brazil
Brazil is in the Southern Hemisphere, so the longest days fall around 21 December and the shortest around 21 June — the opposite of Europe, the US, and India. At the Brasília reference, June day length is 11h 12m and December is 13h 4m.
Brazil keeps a fixed civil offset year-round, so clocks do not jump in spring or autumn. Seasonal sunrise changes come from Earth's tilt and orbit, not from Daylight Saving Time.
Latitude still sets day length. In June, Manaus (-3.1° ) has 11h 57m of daylight versus 10h 13m in Porto Alegre (-30.0°). In December those figures are 12h 18m and 14h 4m.
This country uses 5 IANA timezones among the cities listed here. Recife and Manaus do not share a clock, so comparing printed sunrise times without converting to UTC is misleading. On 21 June those local sunrises are 05:31 AM (America/Recife) and 06:03 AM (America/Manaus).
Brazil is southern-hemisphere for most of its population: longest days in December, shortest in June. It also spans multiple time zones — Manaus is not on São Paulo’s clock — so a national sunset time is meaningless.
Porto Alegre (Porto Alegre latitude) swings much more than equatorial Manaus. Rio’s famous west-facing beaches are a viewpoint story on top of the timezone map.
