How Seasons Change Sunrise & Sunset in United Kingdom
United Kingdom follows the northern seasonal clock: longest days around 21 June, shortest around 21 December. At the London reference in 2026, June 21 sunrise is 04:43 AM and sunset 09:21 PM (16h 38m); December 21 is 08:03 AM / 03:52 PM (7h 49m).
United Kingdom observes Daylight Saving Time, so printed sunrise and sunset jump by an hour when the offset changes — on top of the Sun's real seasonal motion.
Latitude still sets day length. In June, Edinburgh (56.0° ) has 17h 36m of daylight versus 16h 30m in Brighton (50.8°). In December those figures are 6h 58m and 7h 57m.
Listed cities share one civil timezone, but they still span about 6° of longitude (~23 minutes of true solar time). On 21 June, London sunrise is 04:43 AM while Belfast is 04:47 AM on the same clock.
Above 50°N the daylight swing is the headline. Edinburgh can keep civil twilight going toward midnight in June, while Brighton still gets a proper night. Greenwich’s Prime Meridian is why “noon” on a UK clock is a political average of solar time along 0° longitude — useful, but not the same as local transit in Belfast or Norwich.
British Summer Time (late March to late October) shifts every printed time by an hour. Read the 2026 London–Edinburgh comparison in UK daylight from London to Edinburgh.
