Solar & Astronomical Facts About Germany
- 1Berlin enjoys nearly 17 hours of daylight during mid-June solstices.
- 2Central European Summer Time (CEST UTC+2) shifts sunset times past 9:30 PM in northern Germany.
- 3The Bavarian Alps provide scenic alpine golden hour reflections on alpine lakes.
How Seasons Change Sunrise & Sunset in Germany
Germany follows the northern seasonal clock: longest days around 21 June, shortest around 21 December. At the Berlin reference in 2026, June 21 sunrise is 04:43 AM and sunset 09:33 PM (16h 50m); December 21 is 08:14 AM / 03:53 PM (7h 39m).
Germany observes Daylight Saving Time, so printed sunrise and sunset jump by an hour when the offset changes — on top of the Sun's real seasonal motion.
Latitude still sets day length. In June, Hamburg (53.6° ) has 17h 3m of daylight versus 16h 4m in Munich (48.1°). In December those figures are 7h 28m and 8h 21m.
Listed cities share one civil timezone, but they still span about 7° of longitude (~28 minutes of true solar time). On 21 June, Dresden sunrise is 04:50 AM while Düsseldorf is 05:17 AM on the same clock.
Hamburg in June can push sunset toward 10:00 PM CEST, while Munich in Bavaria keeps a slightly shorter alpine day. Central European Summer Time is why those evening clocks look so late compared with the same solar geometry in winter CET.
Berlin’s June sunrise before 5:00 AM CEST is a latitude story; Munich’s milder winter day length is the other half. Open each city page rather than treating the capital widget as the whole country.
