Introduction

Oʻahu’s south and east shores split the day cleanly. Lanikai, Waimānalo, and the Diamond Head summit look at the Pacific at dawn (Mokulua Islands in the famous Lanikai frame). Magic Island, Ala Moana, and west-facing lochs catch dusk. Hawaii does not observe daylight saving: Pacific/Honolulu stays on HST. Trade-wind mornings are the reliable window; vog from the Big Island can mute color on some days. Use the Honolulu city page for today’s exact clock, then this guide for where to stand.

Best places to watch sunrise in Honolulu

Lanikai Beach

beach

Powder sand and the two Mokulua islets. Oʻahu’s most photographed dawn. Public, small, and crowded if you arrive at the disk minute.

When to go

Park and walk before civil dawn. The Honolulu sunrise time is the planning number; the islets composition is the photography problem.

Diamond Head summit

viewpoint

Crater rim over Waikīkī and the Pacific. A hike in the dark for a 360° sunrise — city on one side, ocean on the other.

When to go

Reservations and first-entry matter. The trail is east-facing at the top; Waikīkī lights are the foreground.

Makapuʻu Point

viewpoint

Lighthouse trail on the east end. Open ocean dawn without Lanikai’s sand.

When to go

The paved path is popular with walkers. Wind on the point is stronger than Waikīkī.

Waimānalo Beach

beach

Longer, less famous east-shore sunrise than Lanikai. Same ocean, more room.

When to go

Weekdays. The Koʻolau range is behind you — face the water.

Best places to watch sunset in Honolulu

Magic Island (ʻĀina Moana)

beach

Ala Moana’s peninsula. West-facing lagoon, Waikīkī towers, and sailboats — Honolulu’s easy public sunset.

When to go

The Honolulu evening golden-hour window is when to be on the lawn, not the official minute only.

Tantalus Lookout

viewpoint

Round Top Drive. Rainforest ridges and city dusk — a height sunset when the beach is packed.

When to go

Cloud can sit on the ridge. Have Magic Island as plan B.

Kakaʻako Waterfront

urban

Park and industrial edge west of downtown. A local sunset that is not Waikīkī.

When to go

Blue hour with city lights. The disk may drop behind ʻEwa rather than into empty ocean depending on season.

Waikīkī Beach (west end / Fort DeRussy)

beach

Tourist dusk. Diamond Head is the eastern landmark — at sunset you are looking the other way, toward the leeward sky.

When to go

Crowded. Magic Island is usually a cleaner west horizon a short walk west.

Best time to visit for sunrise & sunset

Year-round tropical light; winter (Nov–Mar) brings bigger north-shore surf (not the sunrise beaches) and slightly later sunrises. Summer dawns are earlier. Book Diamond Head’s first entry. Lanikai parking fills before sunrise on weekends — go midweek or use a bike.

Photography tips for Honolulu

  • Lanikai and Diamond Head are sunrise. Magic Island is sunset. Do not mix them.
  • Hawaii has no DST — the Honolulu page will not jump an hour in March.
  • Mokulua Islands need a slightly south-of-east composition at Lanikai; walk the beach to line them up.
  • Salt spray. A cloth for the lens at Diamond Head and Magic Island is not optional.

For the +6° to −4° window anywhere on Earth, use the golden hour calculator. For indigo twilight, see the blue hour guide.
