Introduction

Bali is a small island with a hard east–west split. The Indian Ocean and Bukit cliffs on the south and west are sunset country (Uluwatu, Tanah Lot, Canggu). The east coast (Sanur, Amed, Candidasa) and the volcanoes (Batur, Agung) are sunrise country. Official times below are computed for Denpasar’s latitude and longitude in Asia/Makassar (WITA, UTC+8, no DST). A ridge or temple wall can hide the disk; use the custom lat/lng calculator for a specific beach or crater rim.

Bali does not yet have a dedicated city solar page on this site. Times on this guide are computed for -8.4095°, 115.1889° (Asia/Makassar) with the same NOAA/Meeus engine. For a trailhead or resort pin, use the custom lat/lng calculator.

Best places to watch sunrise in Bali

Mount Batur crater rim

viewpoint

The island’s signature dawn: trekking in the dark to watch the Sun lift over Mount Agung and the sea of cloud. This is a volcano sunrise, not a beach sunrise.

When to go

Start 2–3 hours before Denpasar sunrise. Cloud sits in the caldera often — the color can still be strong even if Agung is hidden.

Sanur Beach

beach

East-facing reef and traditional boats. Bali’s easiest public sunrise shore — walkable, no climb, disk over water.

When to go

The reef is shallow; low tide adds foreground. This is not a sunset beach.

Amed and Jemeluk Bay

beach

East Bali fishing coast. Agung can sit in the frame at dawn. Quieter than Sanur, longer drive from the south.

When to go

Black sand and outriggers as foreground. Sunrise azimuth shifts through the year — check a compass heading.

Lempuyang Temple

viewpoint

The split-gate photograph with Agung in the “mirror.” It is a sunrise temple visit, often with queues.

When to go

Go as early as the temple allows. The famous reflection is a puddle, not a lake — morning light is the honest part.

Best places to watch sunset in Bali

Uluwatu Temple

viewpoint

Limestone cliffs on the Bukit. The Indian Ocean is west-southwest — a true sunset temple, plus kecak at dusk.

When to go

The cliff can block the last minutes of disk. Evening golden hour is when the ocean color starts.

Tanah Lot

viewpoint

Sea temple on a rock, west coast. The postcard sunset. Crowds and tide both matter.

When to go

Tide tables decide whether the rock is an island. Weekdays. Stay through afterglow; the lights on the pura come up in blue hour.

Echo Beach, Canggu

beach

West-facing surf beach. Sunset over the Indian Ocean with warungs behind the sand.

When to go

Swell and spray. A longer lens isolates the disk from the crowd on the berm.

Jimbaran Bay

beach

Southwest-facing bay. Seafood grills at dusk — the Sun drops toward the Bukit and ocean, not over Sanur.

When to go

This is dinner sunset, not a volcano dawn. Different island, different direction.

Best time to visit for sunrise & sunset

The drier months (roughly April–October) give more reliable dawn treks and cleaner west-coast sunsets. November–March is wetter: sunrise still happens, but Batur can sit in cloud and west-coast swell gets bigger. High season crowds Uluwatu and Tanah Lot at dusk — weekdays and shoulder months help.

Photography tips for Bali

  • Sanur and Amed face east — sunrise beaches. Canggu, Tanah Lot, and Jimbaran face west — sunset.
  • Mount Batur starts in the dark. The disk time at Denpasar is a guide; the crater rim is higher and can see the Sun slightly earlier over the clouds.
  • Temple silhouettes (Tanah Lot, Uluwatu) work best when you expose for the sky and accept the pura as a black shape.
  • Equatorial golden hour is short. Be in place by the start of the evening window, not at the official sunset minute.

For the +6° to −4° window anywhere on Earth, use the golden hour calculator. For indigo twilight, see the blue hour guide.

Nearby attractions (still about the light)

  • Nusa Penida’s west-facing cliffs (Kelingking) for a different sunset island — extra boat time, same timezone.
  • Lempuyang’s “Gates of Heaven” — a sunrise temple composition on the east slope of Agung, not a beach.
  • Campuhan Ridge (Ubud) for a misty inland dawn without a volcano 3 a.m. start.

Bali Sunrise & Sunset — FAQ

Mount Batur, Sanur Beach, Amed, and Lempuyang. East water and volcanoes — not Canggu or Tanah Lot.
Uluwatu, Tanah Lot, Echo Beach in Canggu, and Jimbaran Bay. West and southwest coasts.
Bali uses Central Indonesia Time (Asia/Makassar). Times below are for Denpasar coordinates. A crater rim or west-coast cliff will differ by a few minutes. Use the custom lat/lng calculator for a specific pin.
Sanur. Canggu faces west and is a sunset beach. Mixing them is the most common planning mistake on the island.
No. Sanur is a beach sunrise. Batur is the volcano version. Pick the one that matches the trip, not both at 3 a.m. by default.
