Major Cities in Norway
Tromsø
Tromsø sits well above the Arctic Circle. For weeks around the June solstice the Sun does not set; around the December solstice it does not rise. Official tables switch to Polar Day and Polar Night instead of clock-time sunrise.
Longyearbyen
Longyearbyen on Svalbard is one of the world’s northernmost towns. Polar day and polar night each last months, not weeks, and the official sunrise field is N/A for much of the year.

Solar & Astronomical Facts About Norway
- 1Tromsø, well above the Arctic Circle, has midnight sun from mid-May to late July and polar night from late November to mid-January.
- 2Longyearbyen on Svalbard sits at about 78°N — among the world’s northernmost towns with scheduled flights.
- 3Norway observes Central European Time with daylight saving (CET/CEST).
How Seasons Change Sunrise & Sunset in Norway
Norway follows the northern seasonal clock: longest days around 21 June, shortest around 21 December. At the Oslo reference in 2026, June 21 sunrise is 03:53 AM and sunset 10:43 PM (18h 50m); December 21 is 09:17 AM / 03:11 PM (5h 54m).
Norway observes Daylight Saving Time, so printed sunrise and sunset jump by an hour when the offset changes — on top of the Sun's real seasonal motion.
Latitude still sets day length. In June, Longyearbyen (78.2° ) has Polar Day (24h) of daylight versus Polar Day (24h) in Tromsø (69.6°). In December those figures are Polar Night (0h) and Polar Night (0h).
This country uses 2 IANA timezones among the cities listed here. Tromsø and Longyearbyen do not share a clock, so comparing printed sunrise times without converting to UTC is misleading. On 21 June those local sunrises are N/A (Europe/Oslo) and N/A (Arctic/Longyearbyen).
Norway’s solar story is Arctic, not east–west. Longyearbyen can spend weeks with no sunset (midnight sun) and weeks with no sunrise (polar night). Oslo at the capital widget still has a normal rise and set every day.
Use the midnight sun hub for Polar Day dates, then open the city calendar — the engine prints Polar Day/Night instead of a fake clock time.
2026 Solstice Snapshot — Cities in Norway
Official sunrise and sunset (upper limb on a flat horizon) on 21 June (northern summer) and 21 December (northern winter), each city’s local timezone. Sorted east to west. Open a city page for the live calendar, azimuth, and golden hour.
| City | Timezone | 21 Jun sunrise | 21 Jun sunset | Jun day | 21 Dec sunrise | 21 Dec sunset | Dec day |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tromsø | Europe/Oslo | N/A | N/A | Polar Day (24h) | N/A | N/A | Polar Night (0h) |
| Longyearbyen | Arctic/Longyearbyen | N/A | N/A | Polar Day (24h) | N/A | N/A | Polar Night (0h) |
At the Oslo reference in 2026, the longest civil day is Jun 19, 2026 (18h 50m 0s) and the shortest is Dec 19, 2026 (5h 54m 0s). Earliest sunrise and latest sunset often miss the solstice by a few days because of the Equation of Time.
Use this page for today’s times across Norway and a 7-day forecast. Times in the widget are computed for the capital reference (Oslo) in Europe/Oslo. The month calendar below adds azimuth, twilight, golden hour, and blue hour. City pages pick up longitude-specific clock shifts and popular viewpoints.
