How Seasons Change Sunrise & Sunset in France
France follows the northern seasonal clock: longest days around 21 June, shortest around 21 December. At the Paris reference in 2026, June 21 sunrise is 05:47 AM and sunset 09:57 PM (16h 10m); December 21 is 08:40 AM / 04:55 PM (8h 15m).
France observes Daylight Saving Time, so printed sunrise and sunset jump by an hour when the offset changes — on top of the Sun's real seasonal motion.
Latitude still sets day length. In June, Lille (50.6° ) has 16h 29m of daylight versus 15h 24m in Marseille (43.3°). In December those figures are 7h 58m and 8h 58m.
Listed cities share one civil timezone, but they still span about 9° of longitude (~37 minutes of true solar time). On 21 June, Strasbourg sunrise is 05:26 AM while Nantes is 06:10 AM on the same clock.
Paris midsummer sunsets after 9:50 PM CEST are famous; Marseille on the Mediterranean keeps a shorter, brighter day and a more southerly winter. France’s longitude is modest, so the drama is north–south day length plus CEST, not a two-hour one-zone gap.
The Côte d’Azur’s reputation for sunshine is weather and latitude together: more clear evenings, not a different Sun. Use the city calendar when you care about the minute, not the postcard.
