How Seasons Change Sunrise & Sunset in Canada
Canada follows the northern seasonal clock: longest days around 21 June, shortest around 21 December. At the Ottawa reference in 2026, June 21 sunrise is 05:14 AM and sunset 08:54 PM (15h 40m); December 21 is 07:39 AM / 04:21 PM (8h 42m).
Canada observes Daylight Saving Time, so printed sunrise and sunset jump by an hour when the offset changes — on top of the Sun's real seasonal motion.
Latitude still sets day length. In June, Edmonton (53.5° ) has 17h 3m of daylight versus 15h 26m in Toronto (43.7°). In December those figures are 7h 28m and 8h 55m.
This country uses 5 IANA timezones among the cities listed here. Halifax and Victoria do not share a clock, so comparing printed sunrise times without converting to UTC is misleading. On 21 June those local sunrises are 05:29 AM (America/Halifax) and 05:11 AM (America/Vancouver).
Canada stacks six civil time zones on high northern latitudes. Halifax sees dawn first in absolute time; Victoria prints a late Pacific sunrise. Prairie cities such as Edmonton add a second shock: June evenings past 10:00 PM and December days under eight hours.
The territories go further — midnight twilight and polar day — but even the ten listed metros are enough to make a single “sunrise in Canada” headline useless. Compare the big three in sunrise across Canada.
