Why Sunrise in New York Is Not the Same as Los Angeles (US Time Zones Explained)

A search for “sunrise in the United States today” is asking the wrong question. The contiguous US spans four civil time zones, plus Alaska and Hawaii. Longitude, latitude, and Daylight Saving Time all print different numbers on the same calendar date.

Unlike India, American clocks mostly follow the Sun west. That is why New York and Los Angeles can show similar-looking local sunrise times even though the disk appears over the Atlantic hours before it clears the Pacific. The leftover drama is latitude: Seattle’s June evening is not Miami’s.

This guide uses 21 June and 21 December 2026 times computed with the same NOAA/Meeus-style algorithms as Sunset Sunrise Today. Open a city page for today’s exact clock.

Time Zones Absorb Longitude — Mostly

Earth turns 15° per hour. New York (~74°W) and Los Angeles (~118°W) are about 44° apart — roughly three hours of true solar time. Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific clocks are built to cancel that gap.

So you should not compare 5:25 AM EDT in New York with 5:42 AM PDT in Los Angeles and conclude the Sun “rises at the same time.” Convert to UTC (or watch the sky): New York has already had breakfast when Los Angeles is still waiting.

Hawaii sits another three hours behind the Pacific coast. Honolulu is the late-clock outlier on this site; Maine (West Quoddy Head) is the classic earliest sunrise in the 50 states — earlier still than Boston.

Latitude: Why Seattle Is Not Los Angeles

Pacific Time does not make Seattle and Los Angeles the same solar city. Seattle (~47.6°N) gains almost 16 hours of daylight on 21 June and drops to 8h 25m in December. Los Angeles (~34°N) swings from about 14h 25m to 9h 53m.

Miami shares New York’s Eastern clock but not New York’s seasons. June sunrise in Miami is 6:30 AM — more than an hour later than Boston — because the Tropic is closer and the day is shorter. In December, Miami keeps a 5:34 PM sunset while New York is already dark at 4:31 PM.

That is the US version of India’s north–south split, with time zones layered on top.

Daylight Saving Time Moves the Label, Not the Sun

Most US zones spring forward in March and fall back in November. The disk does not jump; the civil label does. A 7:00 AM winter sunrise can become a 6:00 AM label overnight without any change in solar altitude.

Hawaii (and most of Arizona) skip that jump. Comparing a December Honolulu sunrise with a DST-on mainland city without naming the offset is how “the Sun is late in Hawaii” myths get started.

Manhattanhenge Is Local Geometry

Twice a year — typically late May and mid-July — sunset aligns with Manhattan’s east–west street grid. Photographers call it Manhattanhenge. It is a New York street-orientation trick, not a national solar event, and it is not the June solstice.

For the disk on the Hudson or the East River, use the New York city page and the popular places guide. Official sunset still assumes a flat horizon; Midtown canyons hide the Sun early.

Alaska and Polar Night

Utqiaġvik (Barrow) sits above the Arctic Circle: weeks of midnight sun in summer and polar night in winter. Those pages are not in the lower-48 city list, but they are why a single “US sunrise” chart always fails at the edges. The engine on this site already returns polar day/night when the Sun never crosses the horizon.

How to Read a US Sunrise Time

  1. Open the United States hub for the national picture and city grid.
  2. Jump to the city — New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Seattle, Honolulu, and others.
  3. Check the timezone on the page. Do not mix EDT with PDT in your head.
  4. Use golden hour when you want warm light rather than the geometric disk.

The Sun is punctual. US clocks are a map of railroads, Congress, and DST. Once you separate those, New York’s 5:25 AM June sunrise and Los Angeles’s 5:42 AM stop looking like a contradiction.

Article Frequently Asked Questions

They sit about three hours of longitude apart, and Eastern vs Pacific clocks cancel most of that gap. The Sun still rises over New York hours earlier in absolute time.
Seattle, among the cities on this site: about 15 hours 59 minutes on 21 June 2026, versus about 8 hours 25 minutes on 21 December.
No. Hawaii stays on Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time year-round, so its clock-time sunrise does not jump in March or November.
Evenings (typically late May and mid-July) when sunset aligns with Manhattan’s street grid. It is a local geometry event, not the national solstice.
No. The capital is only the national reference on the country page. Boston, Miami, Denver, Seattle, and Honolulu all disagree. Use a city page.
