Why Sunrise Is Earlier in Kolkata Than Mumbai (India's One Time Zone Explained)

If you have ever taken a dawn flight from Kolkata to Mumbai, or called a friend in Gujarat while the sun is already up in Assam, you have felt India’s strangest everyday solar fact: the whole country shares one clock, but the Sun does not.

On the June solstice in 2026, official sunrise is about 4:53 AM IST in Kolkata and about 6:01 AM IST in Mumbai — more than an hour apart on the same Indian Standard Time. At the geographic extremes, Dong in Arunachal Pradesh can see sunrise around 4:06 AM, while Ghuar Mota on Gujarat’s far western coast waits until about 6:09 AM. That is a two-hour gap on one national clock.

One Country, One Clock: What IST Actually Is

Indian Standard Time is a single offset: UTC+5:30, IANA zone `Asia/Kolkata`. India does not use Daylight Saving Time, so the offset never jumps in spring or autumn.

IST is not “the time in Kolkata.” It is the civil time for a reference meridian of 82.5° east — a line that runs near Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh, roughly halfway across the country’s east–west span. When the mean Sun sits on that meridian, clocks nationwide read noon. Everywhere else, solar noon (when the Sun actually crosses your local meridian) drifts earlier or later.

Those offsets also move a little through the year because of the Equation of Time — Earth’s elliptical orbit and axial tilt — but the longitude gap is the main story.


The 15-Degree Rule

Earth turns 360° in 24 hours, so 15° of longitude = 1 hour of solar time, or 4 minutes per degree.

Kolkata (88.36°E) and Mumbai (72.88°E) are about 15.5° apart. That is roughly 62 minutes of true solar time. Both cities still print the same IST on phones and railway boards, so Kolkata’s sunrise looks early and Mumbai’s looks late.

India’s full east–west span is close to 29° of longitude (about 2,900 km). Twenty-nine degrees × 4 minutes ≈ 116 minutes — the famous “almost two hours” between the far northeast and far west.

Latitude still changes day length (how long the Sun stays up), but it is longitude plus the shared IST clock that decides whether 5:00 AM feels like dawn or still night.

Notice December: Delhi and Mumbai sunrises are almost the same clock time (~7:06–7:09 AM), even though Mumbai is farther west. Winter’s shorter northern day delays Delhi’s sunrise enough to cancel part of the longitude advantage. In June the longitude gap is obvious again — Kolkata is up before 5:00 AM while Mumbai is still waiting past 6:00.

That is why a single “sunrise in India today” headline is misleading. Always open a city page, not only the national capital reference.


Why India Kept One Time Zone

Most countries this wide split into two or more zones. India kept one IST for railways, broadcasting, government, and a shared national schedule. The tradeoff is real:

  • Offices and schools in the northeast start long after local dawn in summer.

Solar Noon, Prayer, Photography, and Trains

  • Photography: Golden hour in Kolkata can be ending while Mumbai’s evening glow has not started. Plan with the city, not a national app defaulted to Delhi.
  • Solar noon: Shadows are shortest at local transit, not at 12:00 IST. In Mumbai that is often closer to 12:35–12:45 PM.
  • Travel: An overnight train from Howrah to Mumbai does not only cross kilometres — it crosses more than an hour of solar time while the clock stays still.
