Japan is the “Land of the Rising Sun,” but the disk does not punch a single national time card. The country uses one Japan Standard Time (JST, UTC+9, IANA `Asia/Tokyo`) from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and it does not observe Daylight Saving Time.
That combination makes winter sunsets in Tokyo look brutally early on the clock (~4:31 PM on 21 December 2026) and June sunrises in Sapporo look like the middle of the night (~3:56 AM). The Sun is not rushing. The offset never jumps, and latitude still rules day length.
One JST Clock, Many Horizons
Cape Nosappu in eastern Hokkaido is the classic first-light spot on the main islands. Among cities on this site, Sapporo sits farthest north and slightly east of Fukuoka, so it wins both the latitude contest and part of the longitude contest.

On 21 June, Sapporo sunrise is more than an hour earlier than Fukuoka on the same JST clock. Fukuoka is farther west (~130.4°E vs Sapporo ~141.4°E) and farther south, so both effects stack in summer.
Why Tokyo Winter Sunset Feels “Too Early”
Countries that spring forward in March push summer evenings later on the clock. Japan does not. A December Tokyo sunset near 4:31 PM JST is the honest solar time for ~35.7°N on UTC+9. In June the same city sets at 7:00 PM — not 8:30 PM like New York — because there is no DST hour glued on.
If you fly from California in July, Tokyo evenings will feel early. That is policy, not astronomy.
Goraiko, Coast, and Haze
- Mount Fuji sunrise (Goraiko): a climb schedule, not a city-average. Use the Tokyo or regional calendar, then add trail time and a mountain horizon that delays the visible disk.
- Pacific coasts (Chiba, Sendai): open eastern water for sunrise.
- Seto Inland Sea and Osaka: haze can hide the geometric sunset listed in tables.
- Sapporo: June 3:56 AM is real. Photographers who treat “dawn” as 5:00 AM will miss it.

How to Check Japan Times
- Open the Japan hub for the national calendar.
- Jump to Tokyo, Osaka, Sapporo, or Fukuoka.
- Use golden hour — it is shorter than in northern Europe because the Sun dives steeper at these latitudes.
- Remember: no DST. The month table does not jump in April.
Japan’s Sun is early in Hokkaido, late-looking in Kyushu, and honest on a fixed UTC+9 clock. Once you stop expecting American DST evenings, 4:30 PM Tokyo winter sunsets make sense.
