Most of us grew up hearing that the Sun rises in the east and sets in the west. That is a useful average — and wrong as a daily rule. On most dates, and at most latitudes, sunrise and sunset land northeast/southeast and northwest/southwest, sometimes by tens of degrees.
If you care about a balcony view, a hiking overlook, or lining up a landmark with the solar disk, you need solar azimuth — the compass direction of the Sun — not just the clock time.
What Solar Azimuth Means
Azimuth is the horizontal direction measured clockwise from true north:
- 0° — north
- 90° — east
- 180° — south
- 270° — west
At sunrise, azimuth answers: where on the horizon does the upper limb appear? At sunset, it answers the matching western question. Altitude (height above the horizon) is the other half of solar position; together they describe where the Sun sits in the sky at any moment.
Only Near the Equinoxes Is “Due East / Due West”
Around the March and September equinoxes, the Sun rises close to due east and sets close to due west for most of the inhabited Earth. Even then, refraction and the Sun’s disk mean the exact compass reading is not a perfect 90° / 270° for every observer.
Away from the equinoxes, Earth’s 23.5° axial tilt shifts the Sun’s declination north or south. That tilt is why June sunrises lean north of east in the Northern Hemisphere, and December sunrises lean south of east.

Southern Hemisphere seasons flip the calendar labels, but the geometry is the same: summer sunrises favor the poleward side of east.
Latitude Stretches the Swing
At the equator, the rise/set azimuth still wanders with the seasons, but the day-to-day drama is modest. Move toward the Arctic or Antarctic Circles and the solstice swing becomes huge — the Sun can rise and set far from the east–west line, skim the horizon for hours, or refuse to set at all during midnight sun.
A mid-latitude city (think New York, Madrid, Tokyo, Melbourne) commonly sees sunrise azimuths range on the order of roughly 60° to 120° across the year — a span large enough that a “perfect east-facing” beach can miss the actual winter sunrise by a wide margin.
Azimuth vs Clock Time
Sunrise time and sunrise direction answer different questions. After the December solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, mornings keep getting earlier for weeks while the rise point is still crawling northward along the horizon. That lag is tied to the same orbital quirks behind how sunrise time changes through the year and the offset between clock noon and solar noon.
So: do not assume the earliest sunrise of the year is also the most northeasterly. Check both if your shot depends on alignment.
Practical Uses
- Landscape photography: Pick a ridge or pier that faces the seasonal azimuth, not a generic “east.”
- Architecture & real estate: A “sunset terrace” in July may face a completely different glow path in January.
- Hiking & camping: Knowing the set azimuth helps you choose a westward clearing before golden hour starts.
- Culture & monuments: Equinox alignments (passages, stone rows, church axes) exploit the near due-east/west geometry on purpose.

Magnets, Maps, and True North
Phone compasses and hiking needles show magnetic north; solar azimuth tables use true (geographic) north. Declination — the angle between them — can be several degrees depending on where you stand. For casual sunset watching it rarely matters. For photographing the Sun rising exactly behind a distant spire, it does.
Also remember: published sunrise azimuth assumes a flat astronomical horizon. A mountain due east of you will hide the disk until the Sun has climbed — and by then its azimuth has already shifted a little.
How to Get the Direction for Your Spot
- Open Sunset Sunrise Today or your city page and note today’s sunrise/sunset times.
- If you are shooting an alignment, treat azimuth as a seasonal target: return near the same calendar week next year for a near-repeat, or track week-by-week as solstice approaches.
- Stand where your foreground and the expected horizon bearing line up; arrive early enough for dawn, not just the final minute.
- Recheck after big seasonal jumps — the June and December solstices mark the extreme directions for the year.
The Sun does rise in the east and set in the west in the broad cultural sense. On the compass in your hand, though, “east” is a moving target — and that motion is one of the cleanest ways to see Earth’s tilt without a telescope.
