Day length is the span of time between official sunrise and official sunset. It answers a practical question — how long is the Sun above the horizon today? — and it is one of the most searched solar facts after sunrise and sunset times themselves.


Day Length Is Not “Dawn to Dusk”

Everyday language often treats “daylight” as everything from first glow to last glow. Astronomy is stricter:

  • Day length = sunrise → sunset
  • Twilight window = civil dawn → civil dusk (longer than day length)
  • Full light cycle can include nautical and astronomical stages as well

Why Day Length Changes

Two orbital facts drive almost all seasonal daylight change:

  1. Earth’s axial tilt (~23.5°) — your hemisphere leans toward or away from the Sun.
  2. Earth’s orbit — we move around the Sun once per year, so the tilt’s effect flips between solstices.

Near an equinox, day length is close to 12 hours almost everywhere. Near a solstice, high-latitude places see extreme stretches or collapses of daylight, while equatorial cities barely notice.

The Equinox Myth: Not Exactly 12 Hours

Many people expect exactly 12 hours of daylight on the equinox. In practice, most locations still get slightly more than 12 hours because:

  • The Sun is a disk, not a point — sunrise/sunset use the upper limb.
  • Atmospheric refraction lifts the apparent Sun near the horizon.

Day Length and Tomorrow’s Change

Day length rarely jumps by hours overnight. At mid-latitudes it usually changes by tens of seconds to a couple of minutes per day, fastest near the equinoxes and slowest near the solstices.
